I like Threads but my main reason to use social media is to get news (from good sources) and update/information from different people that I follow (instead of RSS feeds). Threads is not there yet. I tried Bluesy … not very interesting for now. There is nobody on this system. I still use Twitter. I find, as many people, that the main feed if very bad but, if you take time to make list, this are the best to curate your feed without any ads or nonsense.
I look in on Mastodon now and again, but I’m not very active there — to be honest, I find social media in general to be a major time-sink for me unless I keep a very tight rein on it. I left Twitter, Facebook and the other big networks years ago, and feel no great need to go back. I find I do more socialising online via email in response to blog posts these days than on any platforms (with the possible exception of Micro.blog).
No, you can follow Mastodon accounts from any server. Just log into your server and search for @ttscoff@nojack.easydns.ca and you’ll find me :).
I hate them all (except but that’s because I have never used it)
Twitter - service has degraded, but the largest community of developers of color are there so if I want to talk to and hear from folks that look like me, I’m there. (At least until I have to pay for it)
Mastadon - it’s boring every thing is a political tirade, a technical p***s measuring contest or people complaining about how bad Twitter is.
BlueSky - I didn’t hate it. Just could find my friends and no DM which I use a lot to communicate and coordinate with folks.
Micro.blog - probably the nicest community but it feel like a Zionist compound at time in how nice people are. I’m all for the positivity but like I’m afraid to share anything that would be even remotely divisive.
Of them all Twitter still gives me the most value but man does everyone make you feel like a horrible person for using it.
This has not been my experience. I see almost NO politics there and have gotten a lot of helpful, friendly feedback from tech folks. Way more than I get on Twitter these days. I don’t think most of my 13k followers even see my tweets anymore.
I need to copy your following list. I must have poisoned my watering hole.
Even though I do actively have a large follow of Black tech folks on the Don, I don’t ever hear from them (it seems they mostly boost)
I looked at my timeline and sadly twitters Algorithm was all my black and brown dev friends especially black and brown women.
Mastodon had Zero melanin in 5 swipes.
The political stuff has quelled (thanks mutes).
I am not on any social media or forums (except this one) currently, but I was to go back, I would choose Mastodon. Don McAllister, over at ScreenCastsONLINE (where I’m the editor) created a server a year or so ago, so that’s the one I would join.
Mastodon is awesome. You should come
Definitely Mastodon for me, deleted Twitter account months ago.
I’ve never been been able to find my authentic voice on social media.
I did dabble in Mastodon, but I just never got into it.
That said, recently I’ve got more into Twitter again. I found the recent changes made it better for me, especially the unrestricted post length. I’ve actually had some nice interactions recently. I’m feeling more myself there now.
I have a few different accounts, app ones, a “professional” one and an old personal one. The type of post I see on each are completely different so I can fully understand how everyone see it in different ways. Generally I try to avoid anything with political or culture war stuff and it’s okay.
Twitter and I had a nice relationship for many years but then it turned out we didn’t share values anymore so it’s now my X which I separated from completely. Mastodon, was kind to receive me but I haven’t left any noticeable footprints so far.
I keep an eye on X, but most of my activity (such as it is) is on Mastodon now. The Threads algorithm isn’t working particularly well for me (too much random bollocks), and I’ve barely touched BlueSky.
I gave up on Bluesky almost immediately. Threads basically shows me nothing but these “Dear Algorithm, I’m looking for…” posts and honestly I don’t have time for that stuff. Mastodon is consistently useful and interesting and I get far greater interaction there than anywhere else right now.
